The Tziatsan Children’s Choir is structured specifically for youth ensembles, open to children ages six to fourteen, and is a central part of the Lark Conservatory training program. Since basic singing ability develops with age, the choir meets in three sub-groups: six to eight-year-olds, nine to eleven-year-olds, and twelve to fourteen-year olds.
Ensemble choral practice develops consciousness of the vocal instrument and works to identify, then broaden and improve each student’s vocal range. It is also the most important element in training young artists in ensemble music making. There, they will learn the value of functioning as a member of a larger whole, receive the experience and skill of producing harmony out of disparate parts, and have the opportunity to make life-long friends.
The choir holds several concerts each year, exposing students to the thrill and demands of live performance. Members of Tziatsan are introduced to fundamental works, which in the past have included B. Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols, J. S. Bach’s B Minor Mass, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Mozart’s Mass in C-Minor, and Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms, alongside traditional Armenian folk songs and new compositions.
